Each year the PathCare Academy take on new students for the Phlebotomy Technicians learnership (Further Education and Training Certificate) (NQF level 4). The learnership programme starts in February every year, and the contract lasts a total duration of 2 years. Students are paid an allowance during the programme. The learnership is made up of theory learning and practical work place experience. Students will be educated about medical ethics, physiology, anatomy, laboratory safety and collecting of blood and non-blood specimens. Theory learning takes place in the Cape Town based Academy, while the practical training takes place in various locations across South Africa and Namibia. Phlebotomy Technicians will be taught how to safely collect blood and non-blood samples for blood transfusion and medical pathology. Before receiving a qualification, students must write a Board Examination by the HPCSA – students can then register as a Phlebotomy Technician and take up employment in pathology laboratories or blood transfusion services. On completion of the programme, students will receive an approved and authorized qualification by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and the South African Qualification Authority (SAQA).
